We are dedicated to increasing access to culturally aware birth workers and maternal healthcare providers, ensuring every mother receives the quality care she deserves. Through advocacy, education, and collaboration, we strive to create a future where every pregnancy and childbirth is safe, supported, and celebrated, regardless of race or background.

Why Black Maternal Health?


The high maternal mortality rate among black women in the US is a critical issue, with black women experiencing significantly higher rates of maternal deaths compared to non-black women.

Lack of access to culturally sensitive healthcare providers contributes to this disparity, leading to preventable deaths, especially in the postpartum period.

  • BLACK MATERNAL MORTALITY

    Black women in the U.S. are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, reflecting a significant disparity in healthcare access and quality.

  • POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION RATES

    Black mothers are at an increased risk of postpartum depression. However, they are less likely to receive mental health support due to factors such as stigma and lack of access to mental health services.

  • ACCESS TO PRENATAL CARE

    Black women often face barriers in accessing timely and quality prenatal care. Without proper prenatal support, complications during and after childbirth are more likely, affecting the postpartum period.

  • BREASTFEEDING DISPARITIES

    Black mothers often work in jobs with limited flexibility and benefits, making it challenging to take adequate time off for postpartum recovery. Lack of paid family leave and workplace support exacerbates these challenges.
